Savory snacks for the road – carrot muffins, spelt waffles, and sesame rolls
A long journey, a picnic, or simply a very active day – quick snacks are often our best allies in a busy lifestyle. Savory treats are a great solution: they satisfy hunger and provide long-lasting energy. Here are three easy-to-pack, delicious, and wholesome snacks that work perfectly for any occasion.
1. Sesame rolls – sandwiches, but better
These yeast rolls look impressive yet are surprisingly easy to make. They pair beautifully with your favorite fillings – cheese, spreads, cold cuts, vegetables – and taste just as good plain or simply with butter.
Ingredients (about 30 pieces):
- 125 ml of milk + 125 ml water
- 20 g fresh yeast
- 400 g wheat flour (type 550 or 650)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 60 g butter
Additionally:
- 1 liter of water + 50 g baking soda (for boiling)
- sesame seeds, poppy seeds, sunflower seeds – for topping
Prepare a leaven using the warm liquids, yeast, and sugar. Add the flour and salt and begin kneading, then pour in the melted butter. Let the dough rise for 1 hour. Shape it into 4 ropes and leave covered with a kitchen towel on baking paper for 10 minutes. Boil each piece for 25 seconds per side, then divide into small rolls. Brush them with the baking soda water and sprinkle with seeds. Bake for 20 minutes at 200°C.
The rolls withstand transport very well – once cooled, just cut them in half, add your favorite fillings, wrap in sandwich paper, and take them with you.
2. Carrot muffins to go
These muffins combine natural sweetness, warm spices, and a delicate texture. They make a perfect healthy snack with coffee.
Ingredients (12 muffins):
- 200 g grated carrot
- 140 g olive oil or vegetable oil
- 3 eggs
- 250 g light spelt flour (type 630)
- 120 g erythritol or sugar
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg
- optional toppings
In one bowl, combine the carrot, eggs, fat, and erythritol. In another bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, and spices. Combine everything until smooth, transfer to molds, and bake for 25 minutes at 180°C (top and bottom heat).
Instead of classic muffin liners, it’s worth using baking paper. This allows you to adjust the sheet size to your baking tray, while properly folded edges fit better and effectively prevent the batter from spilling over. Well-folded corners can also serve as convenient “handles.” Simply place square sheets over a glass and fold them by hand to shape. Once baked, the grease-resistant paper makes the muffins easy to remove.

3. Pizza-style waffles – great hot or cold
Herb-and-cheese spelt waffles with ham and tomatoes – they taste like pizza, but are far more convenient to transport.
Ingredients (12 waffles):
- 1 cup light spelt flour + 1 cup whole grain flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- a pinch of salt
- 2 eggs
- 4 tablespoons oil
- 1 cup milk (3.2%)
- 2 teaspoons dried tomatoes with garlic
- grated mozzarella and Parmesan (about 130 g total)
- 5 slices Black Forest ham
- fresh herbs: basil and parsley
Mix the dry ingredients. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, and oil. Combine everything, then add the cheese, ham, and herbs. Cook in a preheated waffle maker until golden brown. Let the waffles cool on a rack to keep them crisp.
Time to pack!
Homemade snacks taste best when properly packed. Wrap crispy baked goods in paper sandwich bags, and use string bags when you want to keep things fresh and separate different flavors and aromas (such as herbs and sweet carrot muffins). This way, the food keeps its texture and is ready to eat at any time. You can also label the packaging with a marker – a great trick when planning meals for kids.
As you can see, homemade snacks don’t have to be complicated. Just a few simple ingredients are enough to create something truly delicious. Filling, wholesome, and easy to pack – perfect for any active day. Enjoy!
